Your personal English-speaking Rome Chauffeur will pick you up at your hotel in your private deluxe vehicle. Your Wine and Wanderlust Tuscany Wine begins with a relaxing drive traversing the Roman countryside into southern Tuscany to Montepulciano, the resplendent Tuscan hilltop town surrounded by Val di Chiana valley whose enchanting landscapes inspire wanderlust.
Montepulciano offers ample opportunities to admire its historic architecture, spacious square, and magnificent fortress, and you will enjoy free time to shop at local artisan shops, and of course, wine lovers can sample a variety of wine tastings offered at in-town wine shops owned by local winemakers.
Wine connoisseurs have hailed Montepulciano the “King of All Wines”, well recognized for its elegant full-bodied red Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (Noble wine of Montepulciano). Not to be dismissed is its younger Rosso di Montepulciano (Montepulciano Red) which is not aged as long as its famous older sibling.
Journey further through the beguiling Tuscan land of gentle hills and fertile valleys, studded with charming villages, vineyards, and characteristic cypress trees until you reach Montalcino, another charming Tuscan hilltop town crowned by a formidable medieval fortress and surrounded by the picturesque Valley of Orcia (Val d’Orcia) whose enthralling landscapes are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Welcome free time to explore the town’s historic streets lined with artisan shops, restaurants, cafes, and wine shops (enoteche). Choose a preferred restaurant and relish traditional Tuscan dishes for lunch.
Enjoy a sampling of the local Brunello di Montalcino wine at local wine shops in Montalcino that offer wine tastings and opportunities to purchase a variety of local wines as well.
Brunello di Montalcino is a ruby red wine deeply rooted in local tradition. Intense, complex, structured, and long-lasting, Brunello is one of Tuscany’s most elegant red wines produced in Montalcino by local winemakers whose vineyards thrive in this corner of Tuscany’s enchanting wine country.
After visiting Montalcino, your Wine and Wanderlust Tuscany Wine Tour continues with a scenic drive through Montalcino’s bucolic wine country for a brief stop at Sant’Antimo Abbey, the mystical abbey that stands in solitary glory amidst a pastoral valley surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, and distant wooded hills.
Behold this masterpiece of Medieval architecture built of pale travertine stone and unadorned alabaster walls epitomizing the austere monastic world of the middle ages.
Legends tell that Emperor Charlemagne founded the abbey in the 800s after he was cured of a pestilence while traveling through this region with his army. After centuries of decline, the abbey was restored to its former glory in the late 1800s and it’s the tranquil home of a few diocesan priests and lay people with established ministries who follow the Benedictine monastic devotion.
Don’t miss the opportunity to also visit the abbey’s Monastic Pharmacy located in its ancient treasure room, and browse the food products that include teas, marmalades, honey, candies, and artisan beer, as well as natural body care products made from centuries-old recipes and herbs.
Your Tuscany wine tour will not be complete without a stop at a local winery.
Following a brief respite at this revered abbey, at 3:00 PM you will visit a nearby historic wine estate of high rank where you will spend about 1 hour and 30 minutes visiting the winery and sampling a selection of wines either in the tasting hall or outdoors on the terrace in a tranquil setting overlooking olive trees, vineyards, and the abbey in the far distance.
Toast the day, enjoying each moment in Tuscany and its fine wines that inspire wanderlust. Here’s to your new adventures in Italy!
